On Christmas Eve, Colt carefully layed out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa. Beside the plate, he placed the envelope containing the letter to Santa he had carefully written at school just a few days before. Tonight was the night that a month of bedtime stories about Christmas and repeatedly being asked "Whaddya want from Santa Claus, Colt?" had all been leading up to. His answer, by the way, was always "A Guitar, Cookies, and Donuts!".
For the final time of the season, we read the story about the Elf on the Shelf, who had been hopping from shelf to shelf in our home over the last month, keeping a close eye on Colt and reporting his good behavior back to Santa Claus. Colt went quickly to sleep.
At 5:30am, Dad sprang awake. Unfortunately it wasn't to the sound of Santa's reindeer running across the roof or Colt eager to see what Santa had brought. It was work - Bah, Humbug! Dad was on call! 3 hours later and with Dad finished with work, Colt was still sound asleep. As it neared 9am, Susan and I couldn't wait any longer and pried him from his bed. "Colt, Santa came!"
