Finally finishing up school and graduating from the University of Alabama, Susan and I took a winter getaway to New York City in late December of 2004. The destination came as a complete surprise to Susan, who thought we were going to visit my sister in Virginia up until the time we were headed to the airport to catch our early morning flight to Manhattan. There were a few more surprises in store for the weekend.
After arriving in New York, we checked into our room at the Melrose Hotel, a charming little hotel on the upper east side. We spent most of our time exploring the typical tourist destinations of the city: Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, Rockerfeller Center, Central Park, etc.
I had done a little advanced planning to setup a special evening for us. For dinner, we went to One If By Land, a romantic little restaurant located in what was once Aaron Burr''s colonial carriage house. The atmosphere there was great - it was, as Zagat put it, "the apex of romance". Following dinner, we ventured back over to Rockerfeller Center to enjoy the Christmas lights. It was there that we hopped into a horse-drawn carriage for a ride around Rockerfeller Center, which became the spot where I popped the big question. She, of course, said Yes, and the rest is history.
