For our honeymoon, it was back to the Virgin Islands. This time, the British Virgin Islands of Virgin Gorda and Cooper Island.
We''d start our trip off by flying into St. Thomas, where we''d spend the night before ferrying over to Virgin Gorda. We stayed at the (now closed) Blackbeard''s Castle. Sunday''s aren''t the most happening day in St. Thomas, so we got a bite to eat at the Greenhouse and retired early.
We took the ferry over to Virgin Gorda and checked into our villa at Guavaberry Spring Bay. Guavaberry was very cool - it was highly ranked on TripAdvisor for good reason. The location was convenient, and we found the on-site "grocery store" a life saver. The store used the honor system, so you just kept a log of what you took and settled up at check-out.
We spent most of our time in Virgin Gorda exploring the island, snorkeling, eating, and drinking. The highlight of the island was of course the Baths, where giant boulders line the beaches forming tidal pools, tunnels, and caves. Absolutely amazing! While you''re there, be sure to check out Mad Dog''s for sandwiches and the island''s best Pina Coladas.
On our final night in Virgin Gorda, we drove over to Leverick Bay on the other side of the island for a barbeque feast. The food and entertainment were top notch and the night was a nice finale to a great week on Virgin Gorda. In the morning, it was off to Cooper Island.
Cooper Island is one of the smaller islands in the BVI. At 1.5 miles long and .5 miles wide, it''s quite small. There are no roads, no casinos, no nightclubs, no cars...there''s not much at all there, other than the Cooper Island Beach Club. We rented a villa there for the final 2 nights of our honeymoon and fell in love with the place. Arriving from a quick ferry from neighboring Tortola, we were greeted off the ferry with a rum drink as they whisked our bags up to our room. The next 2 days we spent just relaxing, taking in the views of the anchored sailboats.
Another great vacation had come to an end. Virgin Gorda and Cooper Island are both amazing places - hopefully we''ll get back sooner rather than later.

Finally finishing up school and graduating from the University of Alabama, Susan and I took a winter getaway to New York City in late December of 2004. The destination came as a complete surprise to Susan, who thought we were going to visit my sister in Virginia up until the time we were headed to the airport to catch our early morning flight to Manhattan. There were a few more surprises in store for the weekend.
After arriving in New York, we checked into our room at the Melrose Hotel, a charming little hotel on the upper east side. We spent most of our time exploring the typical tourist destinations of the city: Ground Zero, the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, Rockerfeller Center, Central Park, etc.
I had done a little advanced planning to setup a special evening for us. For dinner, we went to One If By Land, a romantic little restaurant located in what was once Aaron Burr''s colonial carriage house. The atmosphere there was great - it was, as Zagat put it, "the apex of romance". Following dinner, we ventured back over to Rockerfeller Center to enjoy the Christmas lights. It was there that we hopped into a horse-drawn carriage for a ride around Rockerfeller Center, which became the spot where I popped the big question. She, of course, said Yes, and the rest is history.

After a lousy stay at the Orange Beach Holiday Inn in which we were triple-charged, we were rewarded with 2 complimentary nights at any Holiday Inn world-wide. Since they tied up funds in my checking account for over 2 weeks (I used a debit card), I was determined to stick it to them. So we pulled up Holiday Inn''s website and searched for their most expensive rates. Enter St. Thomas. We arranged for a couple of Skymiles rewards tickets, courtesy of my dad, and we were off to the Virgin Islands on a college student budget.
We stayed in St. Thomas our first 2 nights, free of charge, at the Holiday Inn in Charlotte Amalie. We found the hotel itself adequate and conveniently located, but were turned off by rude staff members and a non-functioning air conditioner. There are too many unique and charming places to stay on the island to waste your time here. I will give props to the bartender at the pool-side bar - he was top-notch!
On St. Thomas we really had time only to hit the highlights: Magen''s Bay, a walking tour of Charlotte Amalie, a night out at Duffy''s Love Shack. After 2 days on St. Thomas, we had our fill of the cruisers and were ready for something a little more laid back.
St. John was a polar opposite from the busy port town of Charlotte Amalie. A short ferry ride from St. Thomas, St. John is far more laid back and secluded - at least at the time. It''s since become much busier as cruisers are ferried over for day trips from St. Thomas. We rented a Jeep (a must on St. John) and headed to the other side of the island to Concordia Eco-Tents.
The Eco-Tents are an absolute must-experience. Perched on stilts overlooking Salt Pond Bay, the Eco-Tents were built to avoid impacting its environment. Not a twig was broken during their construction. The Eco-Tents have everything you need, including electricity. They draw power from generators that give you use of lights, a refridgerator, and a limited number of other supplied electrical appliances. There are no conventional electrical outlets, so you''ll need to charge your laptops, batteries, etc. in the office during business hours.
We spent our time on St. John going from beach to beach, snorkeling, eating, while enjoying the occasional rum drink. Our favorite snorkeling spots were Trunk Bay (crowded but the underwater trail was unique), Cinnamon Bay, and Leinster Bay. We were fortunate enough to be on the island for one of Miss Lucy''s Full Moon Parties. Held on full moons, the restaurant offered up a plate of local favorites with live music. We also had our first order of Conch Fritters from Shipwreck Landing - they were terrific!
Thanks to the imcompetency of the Holiday Inn Express in Orange Beach, we caught a bug for traveling the Caribbean. We''ll keep going back as we continue to cross all of the islands off our list!
